Boiler Upgrade Scheme update: claim up to £9,000 towards an air source heat pump

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme already gives most eligible homeowners in England and Wales £7,500 towards an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump. From July 2026, eligible off-grid homes heated by oil or LPG can now receive an extra £1,500 uplift, bringing the total grant to £9,000.

The uplift is available until March 2027, so if you’ve been considering an air source heat pump, now’s a great time to find out what support you could claim.

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

If your home is off the gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG, you may be eligible for the full £9,000 grant towards an air source or ground source heat pump. Most other eligible homes can still claim £7,500.

Is my home suitable for an air source heat pump?

A well-insulated home will help you get the best from a heat pump. As a general guide, homes with an EPC rating of D or above often already have some insulation in place, such as loft insulation, wall insulation or double glazing.

You’ll need a suitable outdoor space for the unit, with enough room around it for airflow and access. It should also sit on solid ground rather than decking.

Inside, you’ll usually need space for a hot water cylinder, roughly the size of a modern fridge freezer. The closer this can be to the outdoor unit, the more straightforward the installation is likely to be.

Why make the switch to an air source heat pump?

The grant is a great incentive, but it isn’t the only reason to consider upgrading. Air source heat pumps take warmth from the air outside and use it to heat your home and hot water, even in cold weather.

Because they run on electricity rather than oil, LPG or gas, they can help reduce your reliance on the grid and give you more control over how your home uses energy.
