Why install an air source heat pump in Oxford?

There is a check that matters more in Oxford than in most cities, and it has nothing to do with the heat pump itself: the electricity supply coming into your house. A great deal of Oxford’s housing predates 1919, and older terraces frequently still run on a 60-amp main fuse. Add a heat pump’s electrical load to existing lighting, cooking, hot water and — increasingly — an EV charger, and a cold January evening can push that supply close to its limit. Some network operators also require notification of large new single-phase loads.

This is entirely solvable, but it needs to be established before you sign anything. A supply fuse upgrade is usually straightforward and arranged through the network operator, yet it is exactly the sort of thing that appears halfway through an installation as an unwelcome extra when nobody checked at survey. The rest of the picture is encouraging. Oxford’s climate is mild by UK standards, and modern R290 units hold their output well at low outdoor temperatures — a heat pump delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity even during a cold snap, which is something no gas boiler can do. Interwar and post-war semis around Headington, Botley and Rose Hill generally have cavity walls, decent radiators and garden space, making them among the most straightforward installations in the city.

Oxford’s older core needs more thought. Solid-wall terraces in Jericho and across East Oxford run best at lower flow temperatures, so we model whether radiators need upsizing before quoting rather than after. Replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump generally lifts an EPC score, with the strongest gains where insulation is already sound. Treat any fixed percentage saving with suspicion. The arithmetic that governs it is public: under the Ofgem cap for July to September 2026, electricity costs 26.11p per kWh against 7.33p for gas. A heat pump closes that gap by producing three to four units of heat per unit of electricity, so a system running at a SCOP of 3.5 lands close to gas parity on a standard tariff. Design quality determines which side of parity you end up on.

The saving comes from the tariff, not the appliance. On a specialist heat pump tariff with cheap off-peak rates, the Energy Saving Trust puts typical annual savings at £200–£400 against gas, and leaving the gas network entirely removes the standing charge as well. Households currently on electric storage heating — common in Oxford’s flats and conversions — see reductions on a different scale altogether.
