Battery storage without solar – is it worth it?

Despite what many people think, you don’t need solar panels to have a battery storage system.

More than 22,000 battery storage systems were installed in UK homes last year, according to data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). While some were paired with solar, plenty of households chose batteries on their own to cut bills, and take more control over their energy use.

Why solar isn’t always an option

The reality is that solar panels aren’t suitable for every home. Roofs may be shaded or lack the available space, and planning restrictions and listed building status can also limit what’s possible, particularly in towns and cities. For people living in flats or terraced properties, installing solar panels can be complex or entirely impractical.

How battery storage works without solar panels

Electricity prices vary throughout the day – they tend to be lower when demand is low, often overnight, and higher during peak periods in the early evening. A home battery allows electricity to be stored during those cheaper periods and used later, when prices increase.

Rather than drawing power from the grid at the most expensive times, your home can rely on the energy already stored in the battery.

The role of smart tariffs

Battery-only systems work best when paired with a smart electricity tariff. Tariffs such as Octopus Energy’s Agile Octopus track wholesale electricity prices and update every half hour, reflecting changes in demand and renewable generation across the grid.

When prices drop, the battery can charge automatically. When prices rise, the battery supplies electricity to the home instead. This kind of setup allows households to take advantage of cheaper energy without constantly monitoring prices or manually switching usage on and off.

Octopus Energy offers a range of smart tariffs designed to work well with battery storage. If you switch via us, you can also receive £50 off your first bill. Get a quote here.

What impact can this have on energy bills?

The amount you can save per year on your energy bills depends on electricity use, battery size and tariff choice. Over the course of a year, this can lead to big reductions in electricity bills, particularly as energy prices continue to fluctuate. There’s no need to avoid using appliances in the evening or change your routines. The battery manages that shift automatically.

Reducing reliance on the national grid

Battery storage also reduces your dependence on the grid during peak demand. While it won’t make a home completely energy independent, it does offer greater control over when grid electricity is used.

Some systems can also provide limited backup power in the event of an outage, depending on the installation and configuration. For many homeowners, that added resilience is a great benefit.

Does battery storage add value to a home?

Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important to buyers. A home with battery storage already installed is often seen as future-ready, with lower running costs and potential to combine it with other renewables later – i.e. solar panels or EV charger.

As the UK continues to move towards smarter, more flexible energy systems, homes that are set up to take advantage of that shift are likely to become more attractive and buyers could be willing to pay more for it.

Some of the leading brands of batteries we supply include SolarEdge, Fox ESS, Hanchu, GivEnergy and Tesla. We can also combine this with solar panels, EV charging and air source heat pumps for a complete green home energy solution.

We will take the time to assess your home, your energy use and your long-term plans, and offer clear, honest advice. We’re here to help you move towards a smarter, more efficient home energy setup.
