Energy supplier reward schemes – a guide

Many of the major energy suppliers have loyalty schemes, offering rewards to their existing customers – some give you freebies and let you earn discounts without you having to do anything.

Many also offer referral incentives if you make the switch or refer a friend.

Here’s an overview of what’s currently available and which we recommend.

Octopus Energy

Eligible customers can participate in an Octoplus rewards scheme, which could help you save the equivalent of 17% on your annual energy costs.

You can earn points (800 points are worth £1) which can be turned into money off your bill and other perks such as free coffees, cinema tickets, offers on attractions and days out and restaurant discounts.

You can also take advantage of free electricity sessions at green times. In these hour-long sessions, any electricity you’d normally use will cost the same, and any extra power you use will be free. These mostly happen during the summer months.

To be eligible, your electricity must be supplied by Octopus Energy, you must have a smart meter sending half-hourly readings and you must pay via Direct Debit. You can be on any Octopus tariff, so long as you meet the criteria above.

Through our partnership with Octopus, you can get £50 off your first bill when you switch via us – find more info here.

British Gas

A British Gas membership is free to join, and you don’t have to be a British Gas customer to do so. It offers access to things like discounted boiler servicing and access to prize draws to win free energy.

Some of the current offers include monthly prize draws to win free energy of a year (you do have to be a British Gas customer to enter this one), £30 off annual cover for boiler repairs, up to 25% off Samsung appliances and 15% off Hive thermostats.

If you’re already a customer and you refer a friend, you can get a £50 Amazon gift card each, within three months of their switch.

OVO Energy

OVO Beyond is free to join for existing Direct Debit customers that have (or get) smart meters – you’ll need to download the app to get access.

The scheme offers various discounts and rewards, including free bill credit if you have a heat pump, free boiler service, and shopping and restaurant discounts.

You can also get a 10% discount on standard pay-as-you-go rates on all EV charging stations in the UK. When you’re charging at home, you can earn £3.50 a month in bill credit for up to two years, then redeem it when you switch to its Charge Anytime Tariff. To get the maximum amount you’d need to wait two years before switching to the tariff.

Outside of the OVO Beyond scheme, as an OVO customer, you can be entered into a monthly prize draw to be in with the chance of winning bill credit of up to £2,000, if you lower your average electricity usage at peak hours – from Monday to Friday from 5pm to 7pm.

EDF Energy

While EDF doesn’t offer a reward scheme quite like the others with various discounts, it does give customers an opportunity to earn free electricity on a Sunday.

You can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity on Sundays by shifting your electricity usage outside of peak times (4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday).

The more you shift during the week, the more free electricity you can earn.

If you refer a friend to join an EDF tariff, you can both get £50 off your next energy bill. There’s no limit to how many friends you can share the offer with, or how much you can earn.

Switching your energy provider is a good time to consider upgrading your home energy system. We can support you with installation of solar panels, battery storage, EV charger and air source heat pumps.
