And it’s not just the number of installations that’s rising, solar energy generation has hit new highs too. As reported by Carbon Brief, the UK produced 7.6 terawatt hours (TWh) of solar electricity between January and May 2025, thanks to our sunniest spring on record.
The government published its Solar Roadmap in June 2025, which outlines how the UK will ramp up solar installations, build skills across the industry, and ensure solar plays a key part in the transition to net zero and becoming a “clean energy superpower.”
But it’s not just about national targets or sunny weather, for homeowners, there’s a growing list of reasons why 2025 is the perfect time to invest in solar panels. Here are a few of them:

Energy prices are, unfortunately, still going up. In April 2025, the energy price cap rose by 6.4%, pushing the average annual household bill to £1,849 for a typical home using both gas and electricity. So, it’s no surprise that many people are turning to solar as a way to cut costs.
An Energy Saving Trust survey found that 71% of UK adults said their main reason for installing solar panels was to lower energy bills, while over half also said they wanted to reduce their impact on the environment.
This summer longer daylight hours mean more electricity generation and every unit of energy you produce is yours to use, free of charge.
Even on cloudy days, solar panels continue to generate power. That energy can be used to run appliances, charge devices or heat your home, reducing the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid. The result? Lower bills, more energy independence, and a faster return on your investment.
One of the best features of going solar is the ability to earn money from the energy you don’t use. Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), homeowners can sell surplus electricity back to the grid and receive payments.
For a medium-sized home with a 4kW system and battery storage, that could mean up to £900 a year in savings and earnings combined. That’s on top of your reduced bills, which means total annual savings of around £730, and a potential return on investment of £18,250 over the lifetime of your solar panel system.
To qualify for SEG, your solar setup must be installed by an MCS-certified installer (like us), and you’ll need a smart meter to track your usage.
Thanks to a tax break introduced in 2022, homeowners and charities currently pay 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries, a saving that can make a real difference. This incentive is set to last until March 2027, after which VAT is expected to return to 5%, its previous rate.
If you’re thinking about installing panels, now’s a smart time to do it while this saving is still available!

In most cases, installing solar panels is straightforward and doesn’t require planning permission. However, if your home is listed or located in a conservation area, there may be some extra steps involved.
We’ll always let you know what’s required during your free home survey, and can guide you through any permissions if needed.
Homes with lower running costs and improved energy efficiency are increasingly attractive to buyers and solar panels can give your property an edge. Rightmove says solar panels, batteries, and EV chargers, can increase your home’s value by as much as 16%, depending on the setup and location. If you’re looking to sell or rent your home out in the future, it could be worth more than you think.
Solar panels in 2025 are more advanced than ever. They are sleeker (think in-roof solar panels), more efficient, and capable of generating more power from the same amount of sunlight.
Pair them with a solar battery, and you can store unused electricity for use at night or during cloudy days, reducing your reliance on the grid even further. In the event of a power cut or energy price surge, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your home can keep running.
The cost of installing solar panels depends on several factors, the size and tilt of your roof, its condition, how much electricity you use, and whether you want to include battery storage or other green energy solutions like an air source heat pump or EV charger.
