Why Autumn is a good time to install solar panels

Autumn might not be the first season you think of when it comes to solar panels, but it can be a good time to have them installed. With energy bills still a concern for many households, generating your own electricity can help reduce the amount you need to buy from the grid.

Your solar panels may produce less electricity over the darker months than they will in summer, but they will still generate power from daylight. Getting them installed in autumn also means you can start benefiting now and be ready to make the most of longer, brighter days when spring arrives.

Solar panels still work in autumn and winter

One of the most common worries we hear is that solar panels won’t work when the weather is cold or cloudy. Thankfully, that isn’t the case.

Solar panels need daylight rather than heat to generate electricity, so they continue to work throughout the year. They will produce less energy during the darker winter months because there are fewer daylight hours and the sun is lower in the sky, but even cloudy days can produce useful electricity.

In fact, cooler temperatures can actually be good for solar panels. Solar cells become less efficient as temperatures get very high, so a crisp autumn day can provide good conditions for generating electricity.

Of course, you shouldn’t expect the same amount of electricity from your panels in December as you would in June. Solar is best looked at over the whole year rather than judging its performance by one particular month.

Get ahead of the spring rush

Autumn can also be a good time to get your installation booked in.

Spring and summer are busy periods for us, as more homeowners start thinking about making use of the longer days and reducing their energy bills. Having your panels installed in autumn means you can get the work done before the busiest part of the year.

Then, when the days start getting longer again, your system is already up and running and ready to make the most of the extra sunshine.

It also means you don’t have to spend another winter buying all your electricity from the grid. As soon as your system is installed and connected, the electricity your panels generate can be used in your home, helping to reduce how much you need to buy from your energy supplier.

Autumn is a good time to think about battery storage too

The shorter days of autumn and winter can make battery storage particularly useful.

During daylight hours, your solar panels generate electricity. If you don’t use all of it straight away, a battery can store some of that energy so you can use it later in the day, when the sun has gone down.

This can be useful during autumn and winter when we naturally use more electricity in the evenings for lighting, cooking and appliances.

A battery can also help you make better use of the electricity your panels generate during the brighter months. Instead of sending all your unused solar electricity back to the grid, you can store some of it and use it yourself later.

Energy bills are still a concern

There’s another reason solar is on the minds of many homeowners this autumn – energy prices. The latest energy price cap increase comes into effect on October 1 2026, with the typical annual dual-fuel bill rising from £1,663 to £1,723. While the latest increase is largely being driven by gas prices, solar panels can still reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid.

Of course, the amount you can save depends on your home, your electricity usage, the size of your solar system and how much of the electricity you use yourself. But generating your own electricity means you are less reliant on buying every unit of electricity from the grid.

If you add a battery and air source heat pump into the mix, you could eliminate your energy bills entirely!

Be ready for next summer

The biggest benefit of installing solar panels in autumn may simply be that you don’t have to wait.

Your panels will start generating electricity as soon as they are installed, even though autumn and winter production will be lower than in summer. Then, as the days get longer, your system will be ready to make the most of the increased daylight.

We design solar and battery systems around your home, your energy use and what you want to get from your investment. We’re a family-run business with years of experience helping homeowners make better use of renewable energy.

So, if you’ve been thinking about solar panels, there’s no need to wait for the sunshine to return. Autumn could be the perfect time to get started.
